If you ride on the road, this should be your next purchase.

By

from northern WI

About Me

Pros

  • Attention Grabbing
  • Charges Fast
  • Holds A Charge Well
  • Super Bright

Cons

  • None Really

Best Uses

  • Commuting
  • Road Riding

Comments:

If you ride on the road either for training or commuting, this should be your next purchase. This light is super bright in the daytime and the flashing pattern is not steady, so drivers can't easily tune it out. The extreme brightness gives you visibility from so far away that even if a motorist is distracted by their phone or other passengers, they will have to look up frequently enough that they will see your light long before they get to you. I have had several drivers pull up beside me and comment on the great visibility. I used to get close-passed and swiped a lot on the road, but now the only drivers who know perfectly well I'm there, but they're jerks. Warning: If you're riding with a group, turn to the lower brightness or turn it off. Your training partners will complain of the blinding light when you're taking a pull.

Mount adjusts wrong direction, instructions wrong

By

from Dallas, TX

About Me

Pros

  • Bright Even In Daytime

Cons

  • Mounting Bracket
  • Instructions

Best Uses

Comments:

The mounting bracket has adjustments for rotation (vert or horizontal mounting) and for diameter of bar. But not for angle of mount. When you mount this to your seat post, it points down toward the ground, negating most of the brightness. The instructions show it angled perfectly back, level to the ground, but I can't get it to point that way. As for brightness, yes it is a bit brighter than my previous blinky, but I expected it to be much brighter. I guess lumens and visibility is a log type thing, where it takes 10 times more to appear double, or something like that.

Bontrager Flare R USB Taillight

By

from Delaware, OH

About Me

Pros

  • Speed Of Charging
  • Attaches To Bike Securely
  • Visibility

Cons

    Best Uses

    • Road cycling
    • Commuting

    Comments:

When you need to be seen by drivers, this light is a great choice. After a commute to work, I realized I had lost my trusty Cygolite Hotshot 2W tail light. I retraced my route at lunch, to no avail. I bought this and it has thus far exceeded my expectations. Admittedly I have not had it long, but am very pleased. The daylight settings and side visibility are especially great.

    About Me

    Pros

    • Drivers Can See You
    • Multiple light modes
    • Many Mounting Options
    • Excellent battery life

    Cons

      Best Uses

      • Day and night
      • Road Bike Trails

      Comments:

This is a revolution in taillights brought about by the latest LED and battery technology. Despite what seems like a high price for a bicycle taillight, the Flare R is a hot selling item. When it comes to safety on the bike, the price is well worth the benefits. I've spotted the Flare R on the road many times well before the cyclist came into my view. That's when I started using mine during the day as well as at night. The only caution is to use the low steady or flashing setting when on a pack ride. The high settings are too much for the other riders. It's real simple to check the charge status with a red/orange/green indicating light. Charging is real simple with my phone cord since the Flare R has a micro USB connection. I always use the flashing, opposed to steady mode, since it does a better job getting the attention of drivers. This is what I've read in light reviews as well as experienced in our tests with our boys on their bikes. However, I've heard the steady light mode does help drivers better judge distance from cyclists at night. The multiple mounts allow for a quick connection to a saddle bag or seat post. Have fun and be and feel safer with the Flare R!

      Bright Tail Light

      By

      from Beaverton, OR

      About Me

      Pros

      • Variable Light Pattern
      • price
      • time between charges
      • Charge time

      Cons

      • None so far

      Best Uses

      • Daynight Urbancountry

      Comments:

I've used one of the earlier battery operated Flare tail lights and it's still going strong. I bought this one because I was riding my first metric century out in the countryside and had concerns about fast moving cars seeing me, especially since there were little to no shoulders on the road. I used the daytime flash mode (brightest flash mode) and riders behind me commented on how far away they could see me. I always use the flash for daytime riding in the city to help be seen, then at dark I use the brightest solid mode. It charges relatively quickly. When I use it mostly on the flash mode I notice that it definitely needs charging more frequently, but that is to be expected. I also like the side amber lights.

      Perfectly Visible

      By

      About Me

      Comments:

Received this for my birthday in August and have used it on every ride. The strobe function works wonders on daylight rides for visibility. My wife drove up from behind me and said I was visible to her over a mile away. The charge last much longer than the specs indicate.
